We are so excited to share a new exhibit in our Tiny Gallery space featuring the work of Joie Anderson. Before the age of Instagram—or even newspapers—the hottest way to be a trendsetter was by buying a ceramic dog, mermaid, or whale. Staffordshire porcelain figures of the 18th and 19th centuries documented everything from household pets to the news of the day. And to have one, or several, meant you were “in the know.” In “Well Have You Evah?”, Joie shares her collection of watercolors and cut-out assemblages to highlight her love of this specific decorative arts time period. Joie, an interior designer, started painting watercolors of Staffordshire figures after a client asked her to include one in a room vignette. “One thing led to another—it was contagious,” she says. “Once I started, it was so much fun I realized I didn’t want to stop. I ended up with quite the menagerie.” To learn more about this project, visit their listing on the Tiny Gallery Montclair Artist page. * Joie’s exhibit is on display September 13 to November 13. August 2025 The Biggest Tiny Art Show Van Vleck is officially part of The Biggest Tiny Art Show, a collaborative, townwide celebration of experiencing art on a new scale. Artists of all levels, working in every medium, were invited to take on one simple—but daring—challenge: make something small. Really small. Four inches and under small. The result is a vibrant, joyful reminder of the creativity that lives all around us—and the magic that happens when we choose to lean in and look a little closer. 85 works are featured from over 45 artists from Essex, Hudson, and Bergen counties – including our very own location in the Van Vleck Visitor Center. Click here for a list of artists and galleries To learn more about this project, visit their listing on the Tiny Gallery Montclair Artist page. * The Biggest Tiny Art Show will be on display starting August 7 – September 12. Frame into Another Word, Maya Collado’s collection of collage illustrations is the latter. The colors are vivid, almost stubborn in their insistence. The landscapes feel both lost and found. And the stories? They live in the quiet before the twist, in the breath before the leap, and trust the viewer to fill in the gaps—to imagine the rest, or to sit with the not-knowing. Lean in and feel the thrill of Collado’s narratives just before they break open. To learn more about this project, visit their listing on the Tiny Gallery Montclair Artist page. May 2025 More Glue, Please!! Sometimes, the most meaningful art isn’t framed behind glass or hung beneath perfect lighting. Sometimes, it starts with a large sheet of paper, a puddle of glue, and a group of small hands trying to figure out how the world sticks together. In More Glue, Please!!, the children from the Watchung Cooperative Preschool were the curators of their own curiosity. They painted and printed, dabbed and smeared, experimenting with tools and textures. They chose bits and pieces from their surroundings—loose parts tucked into corners, found things with no real name—and figured out how to make them stay. There was trial and error—a feather was too light, a button too heavy. Some made oceans of glue, others careful dabs. Then came a final layer—glue mixed with watercolor—an accidental alchemy that added depth and a quiet shimmer to the whole thing. No one told them when they were finished. That was up to them. Some stopped early. Some didn’t want to stop at all. That’s the part we tend to forget as we get older—that knowing when something feels done is an act of trust. This show isn’t just about glue. It’s about collaboration, decision-making, and small choices that lead to something larger. It’s about the freedom to make a mess and the courage to call it art. Come see what happens when children are given time, space, and yes, plenty of glue. To learn more about this project, visit their listing on the Tiny Gallery Montclair Artist page. * The Watchung Coop show will be on display starting May 21st and expected to run until July 1st. February 2025 Poetic Realism: Light, Landscape, and the Everyday Sublime Wendy Born’s collection of vibrant, textured works explores the intersection of the local and the universal—landscapes transformed through light, memory, and observation. Through the lens of poetic realism, each piece invites viewers to step into a world where color and composition evoke deep spatial presence and emotional resonance. Working en plein air and from direct observation, Born captures fleeting moments: the sun’s piercing glow filtering through tangled branches, the shimmering play of water and reflection, and the quiet mystery of the grounds dissolving into the morning light. For Born, painting is an act of self-determination—a way to reset in the face of an increasingly chaotic world. As you engage with her landscapes, a conversation and connection emerge, underscoring the power of small work to capture the sublime. Each painting is not just a record of place but a meditation on presence—an invitation to see the world anew. To see more of Wendy’s artwork, vist www.wendyaborn.com Join us for a Tiny Gallery Reception, Sunday, April 13th 3:00-5:00pm * Wendy Born’s show, highlighting the beauty of our Gardens, is currently scheduled to be on display starting February 18 through April 20. Art allows us to examine the past, interpret the present, and envision the future, and Ley’s curation of Land Back brings the stories of Indigenous Americans, too often dismissed or overlooked, forward. One of Tiny Gallery’s missions is to bring artistic voices that may not normally be heard into communities and present them in a new context. December 2023 Sophie Bugat: All in the Family Meet the fantastical creatures of Jewish mythology through the eye Sophie Bugat. Sophie’s “All in the Family” collection offers an exquisite field guide to the mysterious and spectacular creatures of Jewish mythology. Discover Theli, a cosmic dragon thought to hold great power over the universe; Rahav, a fantastical sea creature that symbolizes divine conquest over evil; and the Keres, a multicorn thought to have great medicinal value—plus, delicate yet fierce depictions of old friends such as the Leviathan, the Behemoth, and the golem. Through a prior collection, Sophie focused on famous fairy tales and the anti-semitic tropes they contain, to encourage discussion about how this particular form of bigotry has manifested itself for centuries. In All in the Family, Sophie repudiates traditional fairy tale antisemitism with depictions of mythical beings that appear in Jewish texts and folklore. The miniature pieces displayed in the Tiny Gallery celebrate the types of stories she wished she had read as a child. With them, Sophie hopes to educate the public and introduce them to the diverse and whimsical world of fantastical Jewish creatures. * Sophie’s show will be on display December through late-January. October 2023 Tracey Diamond: The Dreaming Trees Fall in love with the autumn season as local artist Tracey Diamond shares her love love note to nature through “The Dreaming Trees”. A fine artist at heart, Tracey see the world in colors, shapes and textures. Her hope as an artist is to inspire others to look at the world around us with a new set of eyes and see our everyday surroundings in ways that we never imagined before… and get lost in the magic for a little while. “The idea for this series was to play in the rainbow of colors that are about to unfold and welcome the season’s change. Maybe by sharing this little glimpse, you too will find more beauty in the leaf that falls in your lap, smile at the faces a tree’s texture makes, or simply pause in the moment as the landscape is changing into the next season.” To see more of Tracey’s work and and shop her pieces, visit www.traceydiamonddesigns.com * Tracey’s show will be on display October through late-November.
