For more than 47 years, we have invested in organizations, programs, and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for those who live, work, and visit Montclair and its surrounding communities. Through grantmaking, community partnerships, and charitable giving, we support efforts that strengthen our community and create lasting impact. As the steward of Van Vleck House & Gardens since 1993, we are committed to preserving one of Montclair’s most treasured historic and horticultural landmarks while providing meaningful opportunities for learning, inspiration, arts and cultural experiences, and community connection. We also serve as a vehicle for individuals and families who wish to make a lasting investment in the community’s future through charitable contributions, endowed funds, and legacy gifts. Together with our donors, partners, volunteers, and supporters, we are helping to ensure that Montclair continues to thrive for generations to come. Van Vleck House & Gardens Van Vleck House & Gardens traces its origins to 1868, when Joseph Van Vleck Sr. moved his family from Brooklyn to Montclair and established a 12-acre country estate. Like many successful businessmen of the era, he sought a refuge from industrial city life and envisioned a grand home surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds. Over the years, several houses stood on the property. Today, the estate’s historic centerpiece remains the distinctive U-shaped Italianate villa that was home to Howard Van Vleck and his family. The house and gardens stand as a testament to generations of stewardship and a deep appreciation for horticulture, beauty, and community. In 1993, the heirs of Howard Van Vleck generously gifted the house and grounds at 21 Van Vleck Street to The Montclair Foundation, ensuring that this historic property would be preserved and shared with the public. Following the donation, a dedicated Board of Management provided leadership and oversight, helping to establish Van Vleck House & Gardens as a valued community resource and horticultural destination. Today, Van Vleck House & Gardens welcomes visitors to enjoy its historic gardens, educational programs, cultural events, and peaceful green spaces in the heart of Montclair. The legacy of the Van Vleck family, together with the efforts of countless supporters, volunteers, and leaders over the years, continues to shape and sustain this special place for future generations.
