Montclair Foundation Announces Grants to Empower Community Growth June 5, 2024 by tracey The Montclair Foundation has awarded $62,000 in grant funding to nineteen diverse nonprofits dedicated to making a positive difference in the Montclair community and its environs. “There is no greater honor than partnering with these exemplary nonprofits as they continue to nurture growth in our community,” said Peggy Deehan, Trustee and Grants Committee Chair. “This Spring, we once again had the most applications that we have ever received; this made the grant review process particularly difficult, and we supported as many organizations as we could.” Every year, TMF’s grantmaking goal is to provide funding for a range of programs serving the community. This Spring’s grant recipients focus on several key areas: Health and Well-Being – Community organizations that help meet basic needs Education – Community organizations which provide the academic, social, and financial support needed for all to succeed Seniors & Vulnerable Populations – Older adults and persons with special abilities are helped to achieve and maintain a high quality of life Arts, Culture & Community Service – Community organizations that enrich our diversity and cultural resources. Health and Well-Being Family Promise of Essex County Family Promise provides shelter, support services, and housing assistance for families experiencing homelessness. Funds will help to support its core programs of Prevention and Diversion, Temporary Shelter, Housing, and Stabilization. Human Needs Food Pantry Human Needs Food Pantry provides food, clothing and services to those in need in the Montclair area. Funding will go towards purchasing protein, produce, and groceries. Northeast Earth Coalition Northeast Earth Coalition provides Free Little Pantries, community gardens, and delivery. Requested funding will go towards increasing both food distribution and production capacity. Partners Partners provides free legal assistance to victims of domestic and sexual violence with limited income. Requested funding will go towards its Language Accessibility Project, which will help Partners to reach more survivors with limited English proficiency, who are at risk of being misunderstood and deprived of adequate support. Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates (SOFIA) SOFIA supports at-risk women and children of domestic violence. Funds will go towards their “We Care” program, which provides these women and children with household essentials. Education Friends of Yogi (DBA Yogi Berra Museum Yogi Berra Museum promotes sportsmanship, community, and inclusion through its exhibits and programs. This grant will fund field trips from Montclair Public Schools, allowing all young people equal access to their educational programs and providing them the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on learning experiences rooted in sportsmanship. HAckNCraftNJ DBA Laptop Upcycle The program teaches technology skills to Montclair Public School students through the refurbishment of laptops and computers. Funding will go towards providing laptop parts and tools. Montclair Free Public Library Foundation The Montclair Free Public Library Foundation supports the needs of the Montclair Public Library, which exceeds municipal funding. Funding will support early bilingual childhood education, among other programs. Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation Supports and empowers disadvantaged youth and families through training, education, and advocacy. Funding will go towards upgrading computers for its Oasis program, which provides academic and enrichment activities throughout the summer. Montclair Scholarship Fund Awards scholarships to Montclair High School Students based on demonstrated financial need. This funding will provide a one-year college scholarship in the name of The Montclair Foundation. Neighborhood Child & Infant Care Center, Inc. The Neighborhood Child & Infant Care Center provides subsidized care for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age, preparing them to enter the public school system. Funding will go towards their summer program for students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Strategic Mentoring Inc./Brother to Brother Mentoring Program Brother to Brother’s group mentoring programs are meant to provide mentoring to boys in the 4th through 12th grades. Funding will be used to fund STEM workshops. Succeed2gether Succeed2gether provides free one-on-one tutoring to low- and moderate-income students in Montclair. Funding will go towards tutoring to address post-pandemic learning loss. Seniors and Vulnerable Populations Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest provides essential vocational programs for people with disabilities. Funding will go towards the purchase of equipment for its Vocational Rehabilitation department, which serves those with mobility issues. Montclair History Center Preserves, shares, and educates the public about Montclair’s rich history. Funding will help provide barrier-free improvements in conjunction with an ADA site plan to make the grounds of the History Center accessible to all. Montclair Shared Housing Association (The Montclair Inn) The Montclair Shared Housing Association owns and operates The Montclair Inn, which provides safe, affordable housing for independent seniors. This funding will go towards rehabilitating rooms in the Inn. Arts, Culture, and Community Service Jazz House Kids Provides jazz and performance education for students, regardless of their financial circumstances. Funding will help produce the Family Jazz Discovery Zone as part of Jazz House Kids’ upcoming 2024 Montclair Jazzfest. Montclair Film Festival Montclair Film Festival educates, engages and entertains through film. This funding will support its Impact Film Series, which provides free showings of specific films pertaining to relevant social issues to high school students. Garden Club of Montclair The Garden Club of Montclair beautifies Montclair and educates the public on horticulture. Funding will go towards its Triangle Garden Renovation.
