There will be “scarecrows in the garden” again this Halloween season in Montclair. Van Vleck House & Gardens will hold its third annual Scarecrows In The Garden exhibit from Monday, Oct. 17 to Monday, Oct. 31 at 21 Van Vleck Street in Montclair. The exhibit is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature tricked-out scarecrows built by local Scout troops, nonprofits, businesses, families, students and artists. After visiting the display, people can vote for their favorite scarecrows in several categories online. The free event is sponsored by Rao’s Homemade, PSE&G, PNC Bank, Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center, and Brookdale ShopRite. Learn more here. Last year, more than 30 exhibitors put together their own creative display. This year, organizers are hoping for 50 total scarecrows. Participants can enter their own creations into the contest by registering online here. Winners will get $500 to donate to the nonprofit of their choice. According to organizers: “From traditionally designed scarecrows to dark-and-scary tributes to Halloween, from repurposed and upcycled creatures to sewn-and-stuffed homages to characters inspired by history, mythology, film, or literature, the only limit is your imagination. Just make sure your scarecrow is weather-resistant and sturdy to qualify for display and judging. All entries are welcome as long as they are family-friendly and homemade. Scarecrows must be dropped off through the North Mountain entrance at Van Vleck House & Gardens on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 13 and 14 between the hours of 2 and 6 p.m., or Saturday, Oct. 15 between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon. The winners will be announced Thursday, Oct. 27, and will be presented with their checks to the nonprofit of their choice on Saturday, Oct. 29.” (brief clip – Read the full article)
