Summer at Van Vleck
Partner Program with the Montclair Institute for Lifelong Learning
Thursdays, July 16 – Aug 20, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
July 16 – Nature Journaling – Slow down and notice the textures of the natural world in this creative nature journaling class. Using leaves, bark, stones, and other found objects in the Gardens, we’ll experiment with texture rubbings and transfer their patterns onto the pages of our journals while experimenting with color, layering and the pressures our marks make. As we play, you will have the opportunity to explore a simple writing prompt inspired by the process. Part art-making, part free-thought writing, this class invites curiosity, creativity and a connection with nature. No art or writing experience necessary to join along.
July 23 – Seasonal Interest Summer Tour – Join Laura Roberts, Director of Horticulture at The Montclair Foundation – Van Vleck House & Gardens, for a journey through the beauty of the season. Tour highlights will include many beautiful blooming specimens as well as a visit to our Kitchen Garden which showcases a bountiful collection of veggies, greens, and herbs. Outdoor tour, so please dress for the weather with appropriate footwear.
July 30 – Collage Art – Unplug and make something unexpectedly beautiful. In this hands-on collage class, we’ll be using natural materials from the Gardens, and turn them into your personal masterpiece. Learn about composition, texture, color and layering, while using leaves, petals, moss, bark seed and other found objects. No art experience needed – just curiosity and desire to play and turn found objects into a one-of-a-kind piece of art to treasure.
Aug 6 – Qigong – Through careful balancing forms and gentle breath awareness, you’ll connect to your body’s wisdom in the natural beauty of the Van Vleck garden.
No experience necessary; bring a yoga mat or towel and an open mind. Instructor: Jodi Brooks.
Aug 13 – Drought Resistant Plants – Join us for a walking tour of the drought resistant plants thriving in the gardens of Van Vleck and learn why they are so tolerant of our New Jersey summers. Instructor: Laura Roberts, Director of Horticulture
Aug 20 – Guided Nature Walk – Spend an afternoon in the gardens of Van Vleck with Volunteer Naturalist Jenny Aley. Search for birds and other animals, as well as the signs they leave behind. Learn interesting facts and information about the wildlife we share our backyards with.
